The temple was built by the great Raja Raja Chola, who was an avid devotee of Lord Shiva and arts and architecture of Dravidians.. All those stone used for making this mighty temple was sourced from distant areas almost 50 miles away. All the Gopurams are smaller than the Vimana. The sheer size and weight of the top part of the temple is astounding. This is truly magnificent temple. At the top of the shikhara is a metal vase with a lotus design. The Brihadeeswarar Temple is one of the few temples in India that have Ashta- dikpaalakas (Guardians of the directions) idols carved on the walls. Such a beautiful place.
